Bago is about 90 kilometers far from the northeast of Yangon. Many consider that Mon people discovered it in the 6th century and known as Pegu. In retrospect, it was the capital city of Mon Kingdom which named Hanthawaddy. After that it became the capital city of Taungoo Kingdom. When the Mon rebelled against the Myanmar in Konbaung era, the armies of the King Alaungpaya demolished the city. However it was rebuilt, it did not attain the original importance. According to the oral story, the Gautama Buddha saw a pair of flying Hintha birds which finding a place to rest. Then they found out a spot which was available only for one bird. Therefore, the male bird landed on it and after that the female one stood on the male. When the Gautama Buddhama noticed this, he told that in the future this place will be a great city.

Kanbawzathadi palace which built during the 16th century by the King Bayinnaung. This palace will give a great impression about how wealthy the second Myanmar empire.
Shwemawdaw Pagoda is the highest temple in Myanmar which is close with Kanbawzathadi Palace. One of the Mon Kings constructed this pagoda and enshrine the several relics from the Buddha.
Shwethalyaung Buddha one of the enormous reclining Buddha images in Myanmar.It seems to be built more than a thousand years ago. However, it became overwhelmed by the jungle after the destruction of Bago. While the operation of railway construction, people discovered and repaired it.
Kyaik Pun Pagoda
This pagoda is a few meters far from downtown of Bago. It seems to be here in the 15th century. The most important point is that it is 27 meters in height with four sided images which sit back to back.
Hintha Gon Pagoda
Hintha Gon pagoda is set on the peak of the hill and just next to the Shwemawdaw Pagoda. U Khanti, a Myanmar monk built this pagoda who also designed the Mandalay Hill. On the other hand, you can overlook the breathtaking view of Bago from this pagoda.
Mahazedi pagoda is one of the greatest Myanmar kings built this pagoda and enshrine the tooth relic from the Buddha which received from Sri Lanka. Unlike from the other pagodas in Myanmar, two elephants serve as the guard rather than lions.
Kya Kha Wain Kyaung
It is one of the largest educational monasteries in Myanmar. You can study the daily routine of the monks in this monastery. You can visit there around 10 am in order to observe how they have their lunch in a hall.
Shwegugale pagoda is just beyond the Mahazedi Pagoda and has a dark cylindrical tunnel. Inside the tunnel, there are 64 sitting Buddha images. From this pagoda, you can use the wooden footbridge in order to reach the spirit of this pagoda complex.
