Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda balances on the peak of a limestone dominating the beautiful manmade lake located near the Mount of Zwegabin in Hpa-An. This pagoda that defy all gravity rules is especially famous at sunset with the Mount Zwegabin in the background. Let’s discover more about the Kyauk Kalat Pagoda!
Location of Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda
Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda is situated in the South of Myanmar, in Kayin State. To get there, we highly recommend you to take the Mawlamyine Highway, pass through the Than Lwin Bridge and continue straight for about 2 kilometers until you see the sign on the road or the limestone itself on your left side. It is just a short distance from the major Hpa-An if you take this road, on the Mawlamyine Highway. This way will also carry forward the Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda to Lumbini Garden.
History of Kyauk Ka Latt Pagoda
The Monastery of Kyauk Kalat is definitely where the famous arhat, Tharmanya Sayadaw, meditated before his parinirvana. Since its creation it has been a very active meditation center so it is required to please behave respectfully.
Nature of Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda
The Pagoda is definitely an awesome attraction you should not miss if you are around Hpa An. To believe it, you have to come and see it. It is an amazing sight not only because of that monastery located right on the top of the limestone pinnacle but also because the lake as well as the island are all artificial and it actually looks very natural. Everyone can easily access to the island by using a wooden footbridge passing through the lake. If you are studying bird species or if you are a nature lover, then you should definitely go there. You will be able to see all kind of flora and fauna as well as many kinds of birds. If you are brave enough to climb the wooden ladder, you will get access to the summit of the mountain and enjoy the breathtaking views on the lake and the rest of the city.
The most important point is, again, that this place is a meditation site and an active monastery. Women must cover their legs as well as their shoulders. Moreover, it is a shoe-free zone and so you must take off your shoes when reaching the end of the bridge. If you are vegetarian, there are always held alms giving ceremony every day, especially for vegetarian.
If you are not vegetarian, do not worry about that. There are also plenty of tea shop and snack sellers around the parking lots area where you will be able to try the traditional Kayin food.
Why should you visit the Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda?
Even though it is not as well-known as other tourists’ attractions such as Shwedagon and Golden Rock, you should really include this sight to your list. The visit takes a very short time, less than an hour and it is definitely worth it. If you want to escape for a time the noisy and busy city then you should stop at the quiet and peaceful pagoda. On the other hand, if you are into enjoying sunset I would really like to recommend this place as it is a must-see.
The reflection from the sun on the pond surrounded by paddy fields will definitely make you understand the meaning of the word gorgeous. From the light of the sun to the gilded stupa, it will definitely be a perfect way to finish the day. Don’t forget to take the beautiful photo of the spectacular Mount Zwegabin.

Up to now, there is no entrance fee to visit Kyauk Ka Lat Pagoda. Also, please note that the pagoda closes for a while every day during lunch time for the monks to meditate peacefully and quietly.
