Uppatasani Pagoda in Nay Pyi Taw

Nay Pyi Taw is the current capital city of Myanmar and established on a greenfield site beyond Pyinmana. It is an unusual city among the cities in Myanmar. Even though it is a capital city, it is outside of any state or region and quite similar with Canberra in Australia. It is about 320 kilometers far from the north of the former capital, Yangon. Moreover it is more central than Yangon and also adjoining with Shan, Kayah and Kayin States. In 2005, the military government silently advanced the capital from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw without certain explanations. According to the official reason, Yangon became congested and fully loaded with the apartments day by day. So it could be difficult to expand the government offices in Yangon. On the other hand, some consider that the military government followed an astrologer’s advice in order to be everlasting the dictatorship.

Zones in Nay Pyi Taw

As the new and latest capital of Myanmar, the former government organized the different types of zone carefully and unlike with Yangon. They are the residential zone, ministry zone, military zone, diplomatic zone and hotel zone.

Residential Zone

This zone is well organized with 1200 four storey apartment by using vibrant colors. The employees from the ministry of health live in the blue roof buildings and green roofs for the ministry of agriculture. Mansions are for the high-ranking administrators and which are about 50.

This area accommodate to the head office of government ministries. In Nay Pyi Taw, the appearance of ministry buildings are quite similar. This zone also contain a parliamentary complex, presidential palace and the city hall. However they have the characteristics of Stalinist architecture, the roofs are in Burmese styles.

Diplomatic Zone

The purpose of this zone is for the foreign embassies. According to the information, Bangladesh and Malaysia also agree to initiate embassies in Nay Pyi Taw. The government also approved that other countries confirmed to move their embassies to Nay Pyi Taw. State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi organized a meeting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Nay Pyi Taw and suggest the foreign government to migrate their embassies to the capital.

Hotel Zone

There are around fifteen hotels situated in or near Nay Pyi Taw. Most of them are within the hotel zone of Nay Pyi Taw and some are on the road of Yangon-Mandalay. In the hotel zone there are also around 50 villas which were for the 25th ASEAN Summit. Moreover, nearly a thousand of hotels and inns were prepared for the athletes of South East Asia Games in 2013.

However the primary focus of this city is the economy of government, there are some attractions to enjoy the visitors and tourists.

Pyidaungsu Hluttaw

By visiting this place, you can have a chance to see the most extensive highway in Myanmar with 12 lanes. In general, this building can be observed from a distance, however you can enter there by a guided tour with permission. For the permission, you need to apply it at least 10 days in advance.

Uppatasanti Pagoda

It is quite similar with Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon and serve as the landmark of Nay Pyi Taw. The most noteworthy is that you can visit inside the dome. Even though it is alike with Shwedagon, the height of it is shorter than Shwedagon. This pagoda accommodates a Buddha tooth relic from China and the meaning of Uppatasanti is to prevent from the disaster.

Water Fountain Park

It is worth to visit for the stunning sunset view. The fountain show is a dominant attraction and it also dance with the timing of music. This park contains the major pond with three water fountains and 11 small lakes with 13 different water fountains. Moreover, there is recreation center, small garden, snow gardens and a clock tower. So you can have an access to tower and appreciate the views. The entrance fees for this park is around 5$ for one person.

It is about 400 acres wide and display the miniature of Myanmar country from head to toe. The floor plan of this park is symmetrical with the Myanmar map. You can be shown around in this park by the gold buggies. By visiting there, you can see famous attractions and destinations in Myanmar such as Golden Rock, Inle Lake and Bagan.

Transportation

Nay Pyi Taw international airport is 16 kilometers far from south east of the city. The domestic airlines such as  Air Bagan, Myanmar National Airline and Yangon Airways regularly fly to Yangon and other cities. From Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw, there is four lane highway links which are 563 kilometers long and also connect to Mandalay. These express companies such as Shwe Sin Setkyar , Shwe Mandalar and Myat Mandalar Tun runs from Yangon to Nay Pyi Taw.
