Things to do in Sagaing

Kaung Hmu Daw Pagoda

Sagaing Division, the largest division in Myanmar. It lies in the South-West of Mandalay, on the bank of Ayeyarwaddy River. It became the capital of Shan Kingdom after the fallen of Bagan era. Moreover, it was also one of the ancient capitals in Myanmar. It is famous as a meditation center in Myanmar. People from all over the country visit Sagaing for the purpose of studying peaceful in Buddhism. Four main rivers of Myanmar such as Ayeyarwaddy, Chindwin, Sittaung and Thanlwin flow through Sagaing region. Innwa Bridge is the connection from Mandalay to Sagaing which crosses over the Ayeyarwaddy River.

There are many interesting places you can enjoy in Sagaing region.

?  Monywa

It is a major trade center with a production of beans, orange pulses and palm sugar from the surrounding Chindwin Valley. Moreover, the local industry also produce cotton, flour, noodles, and edible oils Monywa’s rough cotton blankets are the most famous in throughout Myanmar.

? Sagaing Hill

This hill is full of pagodas and the view from Sagaing Hill is breathtaking. It has enormous range of white, silver and gold pagodas and monasteries. On the top of the hill, you can find the oldest Soon Oo Ponya Shin Pagoda. In 1312, Minister Ponnya built this pagoda and named it his name. There is not any entrance fee for Soon Oo Ponya Shin pagoda. However, you have to pay camera fees and it will mot be more than 1$. According to the information from the Union of Myanmar Travel Association, before visiting this pagoda, there will be the zone fees of 5000 kyats per person for Sagaing region.

? Pho Win Hill and Entrance Fees

You can find Pho Win Hill on the bank of Chindwin River and 25 kilometers west of Monywa. You can also enjoy Buddha Images which carved by using about 900 sandstones. Some caves have good-looking exterior decorations and some have huge collections of Buddha images. Furthermore, you can also feel wonderful paintings which represent Burmese life and Jataka stories. The paintings and Buddha images are supposed to be located since 14th centuries. Moreover, they are considered to be South East Asia’s   wealthiest accumulation of Buddha Images and Paintings. ? Shwe Ba Hill and Entrance Fees

It is on the west bank of Chindwin River and just beyond the Pho Win Hill. Many caves and temples appeared from volcanic rock are fulfill with ancient Buddha Images. You can reach there by stone stair which pass through narrow cliffs. Furthermore, you can explore 13th centuries mural paintings inside the cave. The entrance fee for this hill is also 2$ per person.

?  Twin Taung

Twin Taung lies in the east-west of Budalin Township. There is a natural lake where very rare propagation of Spirulina. Besides, you can find Spirulina production factory at the bottom of the hill. The scenes around the lake are awe-inspiring and have some merit to visit.

?  Alaungdaw Kathapa

It is in Mingin Township and established as wildlife sanctuary since 1941. In addition, it also served as a national park since 1984. It is also the largest National Park in Myanmar.

Alaungdaw Kathapa is the most famous in Sagaing Region. It is also home to the pilgrimage site for Buddhisms in Myanmar. In the center of the Alaungdaw Kathapa National Park, there is Alaungdaw Kathapa Pagoda. It is where the fossil of a deceased monk, Shin Maha Kathapa lying. But you cannot find the remain of the body because it is restricted in the cave. In every February, there is Alaungdaw Kathapa Pagoda Festival.

Only motorbikes, 4-wheel drives, and buses can access there.

?  Laykyun Setkyar Standing Buddha Image

Bodhi Tahtaung Sayadaw (venerable monk) built this Buddha Image.Laykyun Setkyar Standing Buddha Image is 116 meters in height and second tallest Buddha Image in the world. The structure is in hollow type and can climb with escalator to fond of panoramic views. It took 11 years to succeed and completed in 2008. ?  Bodhi Tahtaung Pagoda

It has one thousand Bodhi Trees and each of them has Buddha Images. Bodhi Tahtaung Sayadaw established it in 1960s. Po Khaung Taung lies in the east of pagoda. The 91-meter long, the largest reclining Buddha image in Myanmar lies on that hill.

?  Thanboddhay Pagoda and Entrance Fee

Before you reach Monywa, you should visit Thanboddhay Pagoda, the most unusual Buddhist temple complex. It is 37 acres of land which is part of the Mohnyin Forest Monastery retreat. It is also a modern place of worship with the interesting samples of modern Buddhist art. Unlike most of the pagodas in Myanmar, the entrance is guarded with a pair of magnificant white elephants statues.

It is also the only pagoda in the shape of unique style throughout Myanmar. Around November, you can see the annual pagoda festival which celebrates for several days. The entrance fee for this pagoda is 3$ per person.

?  Kaunghmudaw Pagoda

Kaunghmudaw pagoda is 10 km beyond the town of Sagaing. It is famous for its egg-shaped design  which stands out among , pyramid-shaped Burmese pagodas. The enormous dome rises 46 meters in the shape of a hemisphere. This pagoda is in commemoration of Inwa’s establishment as the royal capital of Myanmar.
