Shwethalyaung Buddha Image, one of the highest reclining Buddha image in Myanmar is located in the Bago region where you can research about many historical features of Myanmar.

Shwethalyaung Buddha History

The Mon King Mingadeipka built this Shwethalyaung Buddha Image in 994. In the 15th century, the King Dhammazedi renovated it in order not to decline into disrepair. In 1757, when the Mon revolt against the Myanmar and Bago faced with destruction, this pagoda deluged with jungle. By chance, the British discovered it in the colonial era in 1881, when they built a railroad between Yangon and Bago. When they found out the Shwethalyaung buddha Image, which was under the hillock and covered with massive jungle. People refurbished it and constructed the iron pavilion over it on condition that they would protect it from the elements. After the consecutive decades, people added numerous buildings around the temple complex. In 1930, people adjoined the mosaic pillow on the left side of the Buddha image. The artistry on the pillows and the sole of the feet are highly labyrinthine and dramatic. In the back side of the image is the depiction the story of why and how this pagoda appeared. In the preceding centuries, the son of King Mingadeipka, exploited into a forest. He met a Mon woman in a nearby village, a believer of the Buddha. After that the prince married this woman and returned to a palace. In the palace, the woman gave respect to the Buddha rather than the statue of King. Therefore, the king was angry about that and ordered to kill her so as to offer his Gods. Before the assassination of her, the king worshiped in front of the pagan statue. At this time, the woman prayed to the Buddha. After that the figure of the king broke into pieces. Finally the king realized that he gave devotion to the wrong God and decided to erect an image of Buddha.

Structures of Shwethalyaung Buddha

The Shwethalyaung Buddha Image is 55 meters in length and 16 meters in height. It lies down in the iron pavilion together with the floor of marble. On the walls, you can see the stories which express about the preceding lives of the Buddha. There is atrium with fresco which shepherds to the Buddha Image. Around the balcony, there is a mythology of Dragon statue, an animals that people consider which protect Buddhism. On a large plinth, the white Buddha Image rests on a pillow with a tranquil smile. Moreover, the images on the soles of the feet represent the auspicious features of the Buddha.

How to get Shwethalyaung Buddha

Shwethalyaung Buddha is on the West side of the main road along with Bago and Yangon. It is nearly 1 kilometer far from the Bago railway station and you have to take a private taxi. You can also take a trishaw to reach there and it will not cost much.

Entrance fee and opening hours

This pagoda opens around 6 am to 9 pm for everyday. If you would like to observe more about historical sites in Bago, you can purchase Bago archeological zone ticket which will cost around 10$.
