Thanboddhay Paya

It is a unique temple in Myanmar which locates near Monywa. Moreover, it is just a few kilometers far from the second largest standing Buddha image in the world, Maha Bodhi Tahtaung. Furthermore, it is one of the tangled structure with vibrant colors and sculpt with over 500,000 Buddha Images. During 14th century, there was a monastery and in current condition, there is nothing to observe. Reconstruction started in 1939 and completed in 1952. During the second world war, thousands of people hide from the war by living in the temple earth.

Thanboddhay Pagoda Architecture

It is a massive Buddhist temple in Monywa. The columns and towers throughout the pagoda, completely coated with tiny Buddha images. The total of Buddha images from inside to outside are over 500,000. Unusual with other temples in Myanmar is that the entrance, the two white elephants shield the pagoda rather than lions.

Actually it was built in the early 14th century and reconstructed in 1939. After reconstruction, Thanboddhay became one of the enormous tourist attractions because of it’s awe-inspiring structure. The temple complex which set on 15 hectares wide ground, a very fussy temple with a great prayer hall and a collection of  compact buildings. Furthermore, the entrance to the temple ground is garnished with seven tiered pyatthat roof.

Buddha images cover with every inch of the pagoda as well as interior and exterior. On the square plinth, there are a number of receding plateau, which compose over 800 richly elaborate with little pagodas. The statues of lions and fabulous creatures embody the plinth. The principal stupa is 40 meters in height.

The visitors can access to the base of the temple. Along the walkways, there are seating and standing Buddha images which sport golden robes. The walls and columns hold dozens of arising rows and inscribe tiny Buddha images.

Other Buildings in Thanboddhay Compound

Next to the principal pagoda is a large prayer atrium, cover with numerous compact golden stupas as well as the principal one. Around the lobby are stucco paintings of significant people such as Kings and ministers. Next to this atrium, there is a watchtower with an exterior helical stairways. Even though every men can have access to the tower and watch the view of entire temple from the top, but women cannot. Several structures around the temple floor are full with the sculpture of people figures as well as tigers and dogs. There is also a pond where fish and turtles are living in. If you want to feed them, you can purchase food from the vendors.

Thanboddhay Pagoda Festival

Around November, there is the pagoda festival which held every year, lasts for several days. Villagers from near the pagoda come and participate in music and dancing. You can also purchase traditional accessories of all around Myanmar from the numerous stalls. Furthermore, Myanmar Thanakha, sandalwood and textile such as blankets can be found during this festival.
